What Happens in a Reiki Session With Me?
If you’ve never experienced Reiki before, you might be wondering what actually happens in a session. Do you have to believe in anything? Will I touch you? What should you wear? And what exactly is Reiki anyway?
Reiki is a Japanese complementary wellbeing practice traditionally based on the idea of working with universal life energy. A Reiki practitioner places their hands gently on, or just above, different areas of the body. Some people describe feeling warmth, tingling or a sense of energy during a session, while other people simply experience a lovely feeling of stillness and deep relaxation. And some people don’t feel anything particularly unusual at all — that’s absolutely fine too.
For me, Reiki is as much about creating a space where you can completely stop as anything else. We spend so much of our lives doing, thinking, rushing, looking after other people and moving from one thing to the next. A Reiki session gives you permission to lie down, close your eyes and simply receive.
When you arrive for a session with me, we’ll have a little chat first. I like to know how you’re feeling and what you need from your time. You might be exhausted and desperately need to relax. You might have had an emotional or stressful few weeks. You might simply be curious about Reiki and want to experience it for yourself.
There isn’t a right reason to come.
You’ll remain fully clothed throughout the session and make yourself comfortable. I’ll explain what I’m going to do so you know what to expect, and if you’d prefer Reiki without physical touch, that’s absolutely fine. Your comfort is always the most important thing.
Then we slow everything down.
Depending on what you need, I may begin with some gentle breathing or a short guided relaxation to help you settle. I might use beautiful calming music and sometimes aromatherapy to create a peaceful environment. Then I’ll begin the Reiki, working quietly with my hands either lightly on or just above the body.
Every session is slightly different because every person who walks through my door is different.
I also love working with crystals, so sometimes I’ll incorporate crystals into the session if that’s something you’re comfortable with. I use them as part of the ritual and intention of the experience rather than as a replacement for medical care. You don’t need to know anything about crystals or believe that they have particular powers to enjoy having them included.
Sometimes we may also finish with an optional card reading. I don’t use cards to tell somebody exactly what’s going to happen in their future. I prefer to use them as a gentle tool for reflection. A card might give us a word, image or idea to think about and sometimes opens up a completely unexpected conversation about where you are in your life and what you want more — or less — of.
That’s really how I see my Reiki sessions.
They’re not about diagnosing you or promising to cure anything, and Reiki should never replace appropriate medical or psychological care. They’re about giving you a beautiful, peaceful space to stop.
You might experience Reiki as spiritual. You might experience it simply as relaxation. You might love the crystals and cards, or you might prefer your session without them.
We can make the experience yours.
I can also combine Reiki with some of the other things I teach, including breathwork, meditation and deep relaxation, creating a completely bespoke wellbeing session depending on what you need that day.
Because sometimes we don’t need to achieve anything.
Sometimes we simply need somewhere safe and quiet to lie down, close our eyes, breathe and allow ourselves to be for a while.
And that’s what I’d love you to experience when you come to me for Reiki.
